The Institute for Ethical Leadership and Social Responsibility
The Institute for Ethical Leadership was established in 2011 with a view to raising awareness on issues bearing on ethics, leadership, and society and providing opportunities for student leadership and community engagement throughout our academic programs and extra-curricular activities.
Higher education in the United States, particularly in the liberal arts and the Catholic intellectual tradition, has long emphasized the preparation of an educated citizenry for active civic, economic, and cultural participation by addressing important moral and social issues.
This emphasis continues to be of vital importance, as the complexities of today’s society increasingly demand that central questions concerning ethical values and their relevance to democratic society and human flourishing be addressed.
Likewise, ongoing moral failures in leadership – whether in politics, business, sports, education, and other societal institutions – require a thoughtful consideration of the moral foundation and social responsibilities of effective and inspiring leadership.
Through its programming and initiatives, the Institute seeks to help students develop the knowledge and skills necessary for becoming reflective and active citizens who recognize the importance of contributing to the broader values and needs of society.
Colloquium Series 2021
The Institute for Ethical Leadership and Social Responsibility hosts a monthly colloquium series which explores pressing issues in ethics and leadership. The colloquia, led by experts in their respective fields, serves as a platform for dialogue and discussion on topics ranging from systemic racism, digital privacy, pandemic ethics and other Covid-19-related problems, to fake news, sports ethics, and civility in political discourse.
Programs and Initiatives
Over the past decade, the Institute has sponsored numerous events and initiatives including lectures, panel discussions, film screenings, and an annual half-day symposium exploring themes in ethics and leadership.
Other initiatives have included an “Ethics Across the Curriculum” workshop series, the development of an Ethics and Leadership Minor Program, the annual Margaret M. Healy Award for Faculty and Student Research on Ethics and Leadership, and an annual student ethics essay competition.
Since its establishment the Institute has played a central role in promoting reflection on and engagement with a variety of moral and social issues.
