Gavin Nelson's Story
Gavin Nelson works as a patrol sergeant with the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, D.C. Learn about his career and the role his Rosemont education played in helping him become a more effective investigator and writer.
What do you love about your job?
I love the varied work assignments. I feel every day that I can make even a minute positive change in the community I work in. I particularly love my department and strive to embody our motto in my work: “We are here to help.”
What was your best experience on the job?
My best experience on the job is recent and simultaneously serves as my worst experience. I was one of the first Metropolitan Police officers to respond to the U.S. Capitol during the attempted insurrection. While it was several hours of complete chaos, I have never been prouder of my agency.
Why did you choose Rosemont College?
Although I now live in Washington, D.C., I am from Bucks County. Many friends who work full-time in law enforcement recommended Rosemont to me. I was initially skeptical, given the distance from where I live and never hearing the name before. I began to research and continued to receive great testimonials from current and former students. The more I learned, the more I was sure Rosemont was the right choice.
What has been your best Rosemont experience so far?
If I could describe Rosemont in one word, it would be flexible. I am thankful that the faculty understand the constraints on working adults and the unpredictability of schedules. With proper communication, professors are always willing to help. The work can be challenging, but it is very manageable.
How was your experience with the faculty?
All of my professors have been extremely knowledgeable and helpful. The faculty is big on co-communication. If you keep your professors updated and aware of issues before due dates, they are very accommodating.
Favorite class?
My favorite classes so far have been the college writing pair. Before these classes, I thought I knew most grammar and styling rules; I quickly found I was wrong. Through these classes, I have become a much better writer in both my personal and professional life.
Why would you recommend Rosemont to your peers?
Rosemont is flexible and cost-effective. It lives up to its motto, the POWER of small.
How has Rosemont helped you advance in your career?
I decided to go back to school when I got promoted to sergeant. Already it has made me a better writer and investigator. I know that Rosemont will continue to help me promote and advance myself within the agency.
