You have options: Students pursuing a BS in Elementary Education may work toward certification to teach grades PK-4. Or you can pursue certification in both PK-4 and PK-12 Special Education. The double certification not only makes you a more well-rounded educator better equipped to serve your students—it enhances your marketability to future employers, too.

In fact, you'll receive one-on-one mentoring with the Director of Education beginning your first year. The Education department also offers networking opportunities, help with resume writing, and engagement in mock interviews with teachers and administrators who work at area schools.
In addition to developing the theoretical expertise needed to lead a classroom, you’ll put your learning into action early on. Field experience begins upon acceptance into the program, exposing you to elementary, middle, and secondary education settings. Our students complete their student teaching requirements at a variety of public school districts--including Lower Merion, Colonial, Haverford, Central Bucks, Radnor, Norristown, and Philadelphia—as well as many private, parochial and charter schools.
Our campus community is close-knit and highly engaged. Rosemont’s intentionally small class size also allows our students to make deep connections to a diverse mix of peers and faculty, helping you find your unique voice and untapped potential. Our intimate academic environment means that you’ll be an active participant in your learning: contributing to discussions, engaging with different viewpoints, and thinking critically about your own.
First year students are admitted into the major and certification programs on a provisional basis as a "pre-education" major. The Pennsylvania Department of Education promulgates the requirements for "formal" admission to any approved teacher preparation program in Pennsylvania. After these criteria are met, students may then declare the major in PK-4 Elementary, PK-4 Elementary with PK-8 Certification, or the certification track.
The requirements set forth by the Pennsylvania Department of Education are as follows:
- Students must complete 48 credits of general education and introductory education courses.
- A GPA of 3.0 (or reasonable expectation of achieving a 3.0 prior to student teaching).
- Six credits of college-level mathematics
- Three credits of English composition and three credits of English Literature
- Interview with the Director of Teacher Education
- Passing scores in the Basic Skills Requirement tests for educators*
*The Basic Skills Requirement can be satisfied by passing scores on the following.
Education Majors must, in most circumstances, maintain a 3.0 GPA in order to be certified in Pennsylvania. Students must also pass the appropriate PECT and current instructional content assessments. As of March, 2016, PDE is permitting students to use “mixed” test scores from vendors for the basic skills requirement. Please see the Director of Teacher Education for specific details.
