Bachelor of Arts in English
Your Next Chapter Begins Here
Whether you aspire to be a novelist or editor, teacher or librarian—or you want to explore your passion for language and the career options that come with it—Rosemont’s Bachelor of Arts in English will equip you with a deep, diverse, and marketable skill set.
Critical thinking and the ability to conduct research are invaluable to success in any field, and our students master these skills as they study English, American, and World literature through historical surveys, close reading of texts, intensive study of a single author or topic, and application of literary criticism and theory. Our program also ensures students become highly competent writers and public speakers, with courses in creative & business writing and oral communication.
Choose Your Path to Success
While all English majors take a selection of literature and writing classes, you’ll develop your unique creative and competitive edge through a concentration in writing, English literature, or secondary education.
Writing Track: Being able to effectively create a variety of content can lead to countless professional possibilities, be it an author, journalist, public relations specialist, or other roles in the publishing field. In this concentration, students acquire a strong foundation in creative writing—including fiction & nonfiction, poetry and playwriting—and media-focused skills including magazine writing, documentary filmmaking, journalism, and publication design.
English Literature Track: Do you love exploring the deeper meaning behind a book and want to take your analytic skills to the next level—perhaps to jumpstart your own literary or academic career? This concentration helps you do just that, as you immerse yourself in society’s most pivotal works of literature. Courses prompt students to explore and understand the complex relationships among language and knowledge, writing and power, and academia and popular culture.
Secondary Education Track (7th-12th grade): If you’re excited about instilling a lifelong love of learning AND language in the next generation, then becoming an English teacher can be a rewarding career. To achieve this, you may pursue a major in English and complete a predetermined selection of Education courses. Upon completion of the program, you’ll have in-depth knowledge of literature, reading, and writing, and the classroom-management expertise you’ll need to effectively teach—and inspire—your students.
